The origami crane (折鶴 orizuru in Japanese) has become a symbol of peace because of this legend, and because of a young Japanese girl named Sadako Sasaki. Sadako’s friend Chizuko comes to visit her in the hospital, and gives Sadako several pieces of colorful paper and a pair of scissors.
Sadako folded 644 paper cranes in all, hoping against hope to survive. After her death, Sadako’s friends and schoolmates raised funds to build a memorial for her and all the children who had died from the effects of the atomic bomb.
With her family by her side, Sadako died on the morning of October 25, 1955 at the age of 12. She was in Hiroshima when the United States Air Force dropped an atom bomb on that city in an attempt to end World War II. While in the hospital, Sadako started to fold paper cranes. Though becoming weaker and weaker, Sadako continued to make the origami birds, but sadly, on October 25, 1955, she died.
